Day 173 Apr.8 2011

well, i tried really hard not to get caught up in this whole government shutdown...but i can't hold back my two cents anymore.

i'm not on the 'mad at the government' bandwagon.  yes, this is crappy, and unfair.  our soldiers didn't make the mistake when i came to balancing the budget, so why do they have to pay for it?  i get it, i do.  but bitching and moaning about how much the government hates it's soldiers is ridiculous and just as unfair and your facebook post is not going to change anything.  yes it is childish that these adults can't seem to work together and make a compromise and it's being taken out on a group of people that have given and sacrificed a lot already.  the entire situation is unfortunate, but it really could be worse.  it really could be.  we could be a nation struggling with our 3rd natural disaster in 2 months, our government could be sending rebels to our door and threatening our lives at gun point, or we could be the ones dependent on a foreign government to protect our right to wake up safe every morning.  but we're not dealing with any of that-this shutdown is a product of a good healthy democracy. debate. discussion. these things are good.  yes, it's gotten a little out of hand and now we're pointing fingers and placing blame, but like i said it could be worse.

i haven't done much more than about an hour of online research, so i know i'm not as fully informed as i could (or should) be, but in looking back at the 1995/96 shutdown, the next 3ish years of budgets following the shutdown were balanced and the best they had been since the 1920s...seems like a small sacrifice if it works out in the end.  but that's just my small (possibly uninformed) perspective.  i don't mean to step on toes, or offend any of my friends that feel differently, you are completely entitled to your own opinion and thoughts, i'm not saying anyone was or is wrong, it's just that today has just been so negative and single-focused.

that is why the rose, that isabel and her daughter brought me as a thank you for watching their dog while they were out of town,  is by far the most pretty thing i've seen all day :)
