Day 27 Nov.13 2010

my first year of college was a learning experience for me.  but who's wasn't?  i didn't understand how grades worked, what a gpa system was, or how to hold onto scholarships...needless to say, i was taking summer classes my first summer to not get ahead, but to catch back up...

to make matters worse, i ended up with 8am classes 5 days a week that summer semester...oh what a way to learn a lesson...i decided i needed to start drinking coffee.  i attempted to become a regular coffee drinker cold turkey.  it was kind of harsh.  i started stopping at the java cafe in the library on my way to class every morning.  but a $2.12 drink 5 times a week adds up quickly--another lesson i had to figure out the hard way...

well we had a coffee maker in our house, but i had never touched it.  i had never even made coffee before.  it took me a few days to figure out the right combination, but i was successful.  and now here i am 6 years later and i'm borderline dependent on my morning cup of coffee.

i've been trying hard lately to not give in to the immediate gratification that tugs at my sleeve every moment of every day.  i ignore the text message or sometimes even a phone call while driving.  i try to hold out looking up information online the moment it pops into my head, or using my phone when my computer isn't close enough...i hate a lot of the time how INSTANT everything in this world has become, patience isn't a virtue any more, it isn't even a common visitor to most lifestyles...

but the one luxury that i haven't been able to get over is having piping hot, freshly brewed coffee smelling delicious on my counter every morning.  i put the work in to making coffee at night, so maybe that makes up for the "instant" factor of it..i still do the work, just at a different time...the smell of coffee in the morning will never fail to make me smile though :)
