Day 3. Oct 20 2010

life as a temporary single mom is still going rather well.  better than i expected.  caitlin is in a good spot in life.  she's discovering how much she can actually do and that's ALL she wants to do.  most of her awake time is now crawling back and forth across the living room floor spending about 3 min on average with some toy that's not really a baby toy.  she tuckers herself out by doing this to the point where she is taking a good 1.5 -2 hour morning nap and then a 2 hour nap in the afternoon.  it is AMAZING the kinds of things i can get done in a 2 hour period...i'm so geeked about the craft projects i'm going to finish...

my first big project that i got to check off the list was making a sewing machine cover.  i measured the machine dimensions-i imagined a big rectangle- and cut out a "pattern" using newspaper.  i then pinned the pattern to the fabric (that i've had kicking around for a very long time) and cut out the fabric.  did some hemming around the edges and sewed the three pieces together.  the diagram shows how the three pieces i'm referring to fit together:

the red lines on the two pieces got sewn together, same with the blue lines.  the black lines were hemmed and make the bottom of the cover...if that makes sense.  super simple, but in my head it seem too simple to work and i was sure i was missing something and it wouldn't turn out... but there is a reason i'm writing about the event now... because it worked!!!

it's not an artsy style photo, but enough creative thought went into making the cover, i didn't have any left for a fancy picture of it...

  1. You'll like sewing, the process of going from an idea in your head
(the critical thinking part) to making it out of something (the creative challenge)is quite gratifying.

  3. I also have been trying to get some sewing time in... I completed my halloween costume and hemmed some curtains recently. This time when I took the sewing machine out of its box and styrofoam packing I wondered if there could be a better way of storing it. Now I have a better idea and hope to make a cover. Thanks for the inspiration. If all goes well maybe I can change the pattern to also accomdate my kitchen aid mixer.
